About

Sarah Baetge, an Asian-American multi-media artist based in Los Angeles, was a competitive figure skater for most of her childhood. In her early adulthood, she became less focused on the competitive nature of the sport and more on its artistic style, exchanging technical jumps for choreography. She continues to dance on the ice, but injuries have often prevented her from releasing her full artistic expression. She has more recently found an ability to translate the intensity and vividness of artistic figure skating to abstract painting. Like preparing for the final skate of a choreographed performance, experimentation and practice underlie Sarah’s process for producing a painting.

She mixes the unconstrained fluidity of ink-based paints with the more controlled precision of acrylic- and oil-based paints, which together can be seen as representing both the wild and tame aspects of life. She constantly alters the tools and medias that she uses to paint a variety of subjects, from the living to non-living, in the hopes of capturing the beauty and depths of the human experience and natural world.

Through her art, she hopes to create closer connections with the world and nourish a greater sense of empathy, understanding, and healing.
